Spain is bracing for extreme heat, as the state meteorological agency Aemet activated amber and yellow weather alerts across most of the country’s southern region of Andalucía on Sunday. Yellow heat warnings are in effect across a wide stretch of Andalucía for the last day of the weekend. Areas affected by the alerts include the countryside of Cádiz, Aracena in Huelva, Sierra Norte and Sierra Sur in Seville, Antequera in Málaga, Subbética Cordobesa and Sierra and Pedroches in Córdoba, as well as the city and Montes of Jaén, and the Guadix and Baza regions of Granada.
According to Aemet, a number of areas are under a level of ‘important risk’ due to high temperatures, with the yellow alert active from 1pm to 8:59pm local time. Up to 42C has been forecast by the Aemet in parts of the Seville countryside, the Guadalquivir Valley in Jaén, and the Morena and Condado area of Jaén. A yellow coastal alert has also been issued for Cádiz and the Strait of Gibraltar, where hazardous marine conditions are expected between 9pm and 11:59pm.
The only province in the region not under alert is Almería.
Most of Spain is experiencing temperatures well in their 30Cs, according to weather maps generated on June 8 by WXCharts.
Monday won’t bring any respite, with temperatures likely to remain high, according to new weather maps by WXCharts, which uses Met Desk data. The forecast suggests a 40C high will be reached near Granada and 39C in Castilla-La Mancha.
Most of Spain and Portugal will experience widespread temperatures above 30C on Monday, according to the new WX Charts maps.
People are being urged to take precautions by avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, staying well hydrated, and checking on elderly or vulnerable individuals.
Keeping homes cool and seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day is also advised.
