A coastal village that has been praised for its ‘stunning’ beach has been named one of the top UK spots for autumn getaways. Bigbury-on-Sea in South Devon is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is popular with walkers, birdwatchers, watersport lovers, and families who crave a quiet trip to a sandy haven. In fact, the village is so highly rated that it has been named as the “most relaxing UK location” to visit in colder months.
Bigbury-On-Sea has been awarded the honour by Parkdean Resorts, which said the “tranquil village” is the perfect place for a “calming autumn staycation”. The holiday company said of the spot: “This coastal gem offers picturesque views, serene walking trails, and tranquil shores. Its peaceful atmosphere, combined with its natural beauty, makes it an ideal escape for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature this autumn.”
Bigbury-On-Sea is located within the South Devon National Landscape, which is known for its wildlife and natural beauty. Just off the mainland is the iconic Burgh Island, which visitors can access via a sandy pathway during low tide.
When the tide comes in, the sea covers the causeway and those on the island can only get back to shore by sea tractor or boat.
The beach is also loved by sports enthusiasts as it’s a great spot for windsurfing and paddleboarding. Amenities around the beach include a cafe, public toilets, and parking – making it popular with families, too.
Dogs are allowed on the main beach during October to May, but can enjoy the beach to the west of the causeway all year long.
For walkers, there are a number of coastal walks that start by the beach and offer stunning views of the cliffs and coastline.
