The police have released a statement after a plane burst into flames at Southend airport.
Essex Police confirmed the huge fireball was caused by a collision involving one plane.
It confirmed emergency services will remain on site at the “serious incident” for several hours.
Witnesses reported seeing a “huge fireball” and black smoke in the sky at around 4pm this afternoon, July 13.
Essex Police said in a statement: “We remain on the scene of a serious incident at Southend Airport. We were alerted shortly before 4pm to reports of a collision involving one 12-metre plane.
“We are working with all emergency services at the scene now and that work will be ongoing for several hours. We would please ask the public to avoid this area where possible while this work continues.”
According to reports, it is believed the aircraft crashed while it was taking off for the Netherlands.
An X user who regularly tweets about airline safety suggested the jet was a Super King Air, which is a twin-turboprop aircraft. No official statement has been released regarding the model of the aircraft.
