A baker has shared the unexpected ingredient she adds to her sourdough before baking it in the oven to make it taste “the best”. Sourdough is an extremely popular bread for Brits to purchase and even bake at home themselves. Once you know what you’re doing, it is a straightforward bread to make and makes some great sandwiches. Plus, it goes great with things like soups and salads.
Sourdough is traditionally a spongy bread with a crunchy crust. Inside, you get that lovely soft bread smell and taste. However, there are things you can add to your dough to change the flavour, and one of them is crispy chilli. That is according to TikTok user @sourdobakery. They added crispy chilli to their dough before baking their sourdough loaf, and they said it makes the best bread you could have. They shared the clever hack in a viral video, which received more than one million views since it was first posted earlier this month.
In the video, we see the baker spooning a generous amount of crispy chilli into their dough. They then use their hand to spread it around the top of the dough before folding it, making sure the chilli is evenly spread throughout.
They then cut to the finished product, which has that iconic sourdough crispy crust. Inside the loaf, we see the chilli spread throughout. “Literally one of the best loaves I’ve made,” they said in the caption of the video.
Crispy chilli, also known as LaoGanMa, is a popular Chinese condiment that has become widely available in the UK, sold in supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco. It is made by infusing oil with chilli peppers and other aromatic ingredients, then adding things like fried chilli flakes, garlic and onions for crunch.
The TikTok video received hundreds of comments from other users. Many were impressed with the clever sourdough trick.
“Once you have tried LaoGanMa, you are just going to ask yourself, ‘Why didn’t I buy it sooner?'” said one commenter. Another wrote: “That chilli changed my life.
A third commented: “This with tomato soup seems amazing”, while a fourth wrote: “My two favourite things”.
