More than 100 people have been evacuated from their homes after heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding in Somerset.
Homes in Chard, Ilminster, Somerton, and South Petherton were particularly affected, with authorities stepping in as a precautionary measure amid concerns about the risk of further flooding.
To help those impacted, rest centres were established in Somerton, Chard, and Ilminster. These centres were staffed by Somerset Council personnel and supported by local volunteers who worked tirelessly to provide shelter and assistance to evacuees.
While the centres in Chard and Ilminster have now been closed, the Somerton rest centre remains operational, continuing to accommodate around 45 residents evacuated from a nearby residential park estate.
A major incident was declared to coordinate a multi-agency response. This involved Somerset Council working closely with Avon and Somerset Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the local NHS, the Environment Agency, and other partners.
The collaborative effort ensured that resources were deployed effectively to protect residents, address the immediate crisis, and begin the recovery process.
Flooding and debris also caused significant disruption to roads, with several closures reported across the affected areas.
Somerset Council Highways teams worked through the night to manage nearly 50 incidents, clearing floodwater and debris to restore access where possible.
Clean-up operations have continued throughout today as teams strive to help communities recover from the damage.
Somerset Council’s Leader, Councillor Bill Revans said: “This was a significant flooding incident, and we have been doing everything we can to ensure those affected are safe and have all the support and guidance they need.
Our thanks go to colleagues in the emergency services, who worked tirelessly overnight to ensure people’s safety, supported by the NHS, the Environment Agency, and our local communities.”
Cllr Revans also urged residents to remain vigilant, given the weather forecast for the coming days. Further rainfall is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, along with the potential for freezing temperatures on Tuesday.
He added: “We are still responding to the incident and mindful of the forecast for additional rain. Please look out for your neighbours, avoid driving through floodwater, and call 999 if you believe there is a serious risk to life due to flooding.”
The multi-agency response remains active and will continue until the situation stabilises.
