Californians can now breeze through airport security even when they’re not flying — just to grab an overpriced terminal coffee, meet a friend or give a loved one one last hug.
The TSA launched its new “Gateside by TSA PreCheck” program this week at 13 airports nationwide, including Los Angeles International Airport and San Diego International Airport.
“This new program makes it easier to return to the gate for welcomes and send-offs, meet friends during a layover, and enjoy dining and shopping along the way, bringing back the moments that once defined air travel,” TSA wrote.
Current and former PreCheck members, as well as travelers with Known Traveler Numbers (KTN), are eligible for Gateside access. Those interested are encouraged to apply one to three days before their planned visit.
TSA PreCheck membership costs $76 to $85 for five years, and about “99% of passengers wait less than 10 minutes,” according to the agency.
The idea drew mixed reactions online, with some users cheering the return of gate goodbyes while others worried it could make already-crowded terminals even more packed.
One person called it “good” and said, “You know how annoying it was trying to fly with three kids without my husband taking us to the gate?”
Another user wasn’t sold, complaining that “terminals are already so crowded” and “we don’t need this unless the person needs assistance.”
The program isn’t exactly unprecedented. At least 21 other US airports, including Seattle and Orlando, already have similar visitor programs.
Seattle’s SEA Visitor Pass Program allows up to 300 non-ticketed people through security each day, although visitors must use the regular TSA screening line.
Other countries, including Australia, have also long allowed non-passengers to accompany travelers to the gates. On domestic flights there, friends and family can walk all the way to the boarding area.
For now, Gateside is available at 13 airports, with the TSA saying it plans to expand the program to more locations in the coming months.
