Up to 20 centimetres of snow could fall in some areas of the UK as a Nordic jet stream unleashes a big freeze on the British Isles.

The weather map from WX Charts shows snow is possible in areas of Scotland and Wales, as well as some areas of the West Midlands.

The east coast of Britain is also in the firing line as snow sweeps along the coast from Scotland. The freeze is being driven by a cold front heading in from the top of Norway.

The latest forecast covers Thursday, December 12 and Friday, December 13.

The Met Office long-range weather forecast for the UK reports settled weather in the south, with the possibility of rain and wind in the north of the country for the same period.

It states: “Moving into the second week of December, there are signs of more settled weather developing more widely, especially across the south and southwest of the UK.

“This may well bring a spell of mainly dry conditions in these areas, probably with patchy overnight frost and fog.

“Any outbreaks of rain and wind in this period are more likely to affect the north.

“Temperatures will vary around average for December, with some milder and some colder days.”

WX Charts has also predicted parts of Britain will face a 333-mile long wall of snow next week as December 4 could see many households in the north wake up to wintery conditions.

Again, Scotland appears likely to face the brunt of that weather, with patches of rain across the west of the country.

North Devon and Somerset can expect wetter conditions according to that forecast.
