A New York Time tech executive who was allegedly shot dead by his elderly in-laws in California had been in a vicious war with them and his wife over being transgender, court documents claim.
Jonathan McKinsey claimed his wife Candice Jang had tried to pull medical tubes out of him when he was transitioning from a woman to a man, the records say.
He also claimed in the same filing that his mother-in-law branded him a “disgusting queer” and a “pervert” after falling out with him over one of their children’s choice of clothing.
The 40-year-old, who was the Times’ head of engineering for games player experience, was gunned down in a sports complex parking lot in Dublin, California, around 3pm on Saturday.
Moments later cops arrested his in-laws Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, who are accused of murder.
In a series of tit-for-tat court filings, McKinsey sought a restraining order against his wife Jang in December 2025 as their relationship crumbled after 15 years of marriage.
One of the incidents included a 2013 interaction where he claimed to be beaten with a frying pan, records show. He also accused Jang of abusing their children verbally.
His restraining order petition also alleged Chen, Jang’s mother, was verbally abusive to the couple’s children, with arguments about the children’s clothing.
At the time, Chen and McKinsey were also arguing over his being transgender, with him having transitioned in 2010 from female to male, a year before he married Jang.
According to the petition, Chen said McKinsey was a “disgusting queer” and a “pervert.” McKinsey also accused Jang herself of being abusive during his transition.
He said that Jang tried to pull out medical tubes from his body after he received a procedure, according to records.
Meanwhile in 2025, court records seen by The Post show McKinsey was also charged with two counts of misdemeanor child abuse by Alameda prosecutors.
Jang had called Dublin police to report that McKinsey had hit her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand.
She also told investigators about a 2018 domestic violence incident, where McKinsey bruised her left arm, the documents say.
When police went to their home, they found their two-year-old child in a room upstairs by himself while he was out shopping, according to a deputy sheriff.
McKinsey ultimately pleaded not guilty to both crimes and was released from jail on the condition that he take parenting classes.
A spokesman for the Times confirmed McKinsey was the victim of the Saturday afternoon shooting and that he had worked for the newspaper since 2023.
