Sky issues urgent WiFi alert – check your router and change the password now

There’s an important update for some broadband users, and not following the new advice could make connections to the web less secure. The alert has been raised for those who subscribe to the web via Sky’s popular NOW platform, with some about to be affected by the end of support for older Wi-Fi routers.

As spotted by the eagle-eyed team at ISPreview, customers are being informed that their equipment is no longer being supported and won’t receive vital security updates from this year. Although the broadband will continue to work, customers are being advised to change the Hub admin password to reduce online risks when heading online.

All Internet Service Providers (ISPs) release regular software upgrades for their routers to fix bugs and keep things running smoothly. However, that will no longer be the case for those NOW products.

One final alert being issued to NOW users is the problem if the router completely breaks. It’s been confirmed that no replacements will be sent out with those affected either needing to move over to Sky’s products or leave completely and switch to a new ISP.

NOW says it won’t apply any early termination fees should this happen.

“Please note, your Hub is no longer receiving security and service updates, or will stop receiving security updates by 2025,” NOW said in an email seen by ISPreview

“However, your Hub will continue to work as normal and will keep you connected to the internet.

“We recommend, as a minimum, changing your Hub admin password to reduce the risk of security threats. This won’t change your WiFi password, just the password used to check your Hub details … From July 31st 2025, should your Hub develop a fault, we unfortunately won’t be able to provide a replacement.

“If this happens, don’t worry, you’ll be able to end your service immediately without any termination fees.”

Any NOW customers worried by these changes might be best talking to the provider to see what the options are. Sky has range of rival products with prices starting from £26 per month. The firm’s speeds to from basic 61Mbps downloads right up to blisteringly quick 900Mbps which would allow a user to download a movie in under 40 seconds.
