With autumn’s arrival bringing a nip to the UK air, many of us are noticing the chill and facing seasonal issues in our homes, such as windows covered with condensation each morning. This misty nuisance is more than just an inconvenience that requires daily cleaning – it can escalate into severe issues like mould, especially in naturally damp or poorly-lit areas like bathrooms.
However, there’s an easy solution to combat this issue – houseplants. Not only do they add charm and life to your living space, but they also naturally help reduce moisture levels in the air, tackling condensation and the risk of mould growth. Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk explained: “Condensation is a problem a lot of households will face during the winter.”
He continued: “Too much of it can cause some serious problems and lead to mould growth.
“The good news is there are ways to control this and prevent condensation from forming in the first place.”
He advised those with particularly steamy windows that reducing indoor moisture is key, and plants can be very beneficial in achieving this balance.
Introducing some lively houseplants is a fantastic way to breathe new life into your home, and luckily there are plenty of low-maintenance options that are perfect for managing moisture. Here are a few recommended by the experts.
1. English Ivy
English Ivy is great at eliminating airborne mould and other pollutants. It thrives in bright, indirect light and requires frequent watering to survive.
However, experts have cautioned to keep it out of reach from pets, as its leaves can be toxic to them.
2. Peace Lily
The peace lily flourishes in shady areas and high humidity, making it an ideal choice for spaces prone to mould. It absorbs moisture from the air through its leaves and doesn’t require direct sunlight to thrive.
This plant boasts stunning white flowers but can be harmful to pets, so ensure it’s kept out of their reach.
3. Palms
Palms are an excellent option for controlling humidity and preventing mould, absorbing moisture through their leaves. Varieties to consider include Areca palms, bamboo palms, the lady palm, dwarf date palm and reed palm.
4. Snake Plant
Also known as the mother-in-law’s tongue, this strong and versatile plant is another mould-friendly variety. It grows best in bright light but will also flourish in low light.
They prefer warm temperatures, making them perfect for bathrooms, and need occasional watering.
5. Orchids
Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, orchids also aid in reducing humidity within the home. They absorb all their nutrients and moisture from the surrounding air, effectively extracting it from the atmosphere.
6. Spider plant
This popular indoor plant excels at eliminating harmful pollutants within the home.
It’s also easy to care for, requiring watering approximately once or twice a week.
