The retired British naval officer met King Charles’s sister sometime in the 1980s while she was still married to her first husband, Mark Phillips, with whom she shares two children, Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips. At the time, he was serving as equerry to her mother, the late Queen Elizabeth. In April 1992, the Princess Royal’s divorce from Mark Philips was finalised, and a few months later, in December, she remarried Sir Tim in Scotland, which permitted the marriage of divorcees, unlike the Church of England. Their wedding marked a change for a different approach towards marriage. A few decades later, the late Queen’s sister, Princess Margaret, could not marry Captain Peter Townsend because he was a divorcé.
