If you’re hoping to keep your garden looking good over winter, it’s important to note that one gardening job could ruin your grass.

Over the colder months, there aren’t heaps of jobs to do in the garden but if you’re keen to get out there and tidy things up – completing this job could actually make things worse.

If you try to mow your lawn while it’s frosty, it could cause damage to your grass that will be long lasting, according to experts at Otter Garden Centres.

Not only this but walking across a lawn when it’s covered in frost will damage the grass so try to avoid this whenever possible.

You can mow the lawn if the weather is mild to keep it tidy and neat, but you should choose a higher setting for the mower blades.

Other tips include to improve lawn drainage and aeration by spiking it with a fork and making sure to clear any leaves.

With the weather is likely to worsen in the coming months, now is a great time to make sure your garden is ready for wintery conditions.

Cold, wet, windy winter weather can damage trees, shrubs and garden structures so make sure to secure any garden items which could be impacted by the weather.

If you haven’t already pruned plants in your garden, there’s no better time than now.

You should prune open-grown apples and pears along with acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding.

Pruning evergreens like holly and boxwood not only keeps them looking tidy but also help to provide better air circulation which will reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

Another top tip to help your garden over winter is to mulch beds with garden compost or soil conditioner.

To do this, spread a thick layer of around 5cm over the beds and leave the worms to work it into the soil over winter.
