Popular cleaning influencer Chantel Mila has shared some of her favourite tips and tricks for making sure your bathroom is left sparkling clean. To help remove any unwanted grime and mould lingering in showers, Chantel detailed her three-ingredient solution for cutting through the trouble.
In a recent TikTok video, Chantel explained that her “bathroom mix” is the key to getting bathrooms “shining”. All you need is three simple household ingredients, including the highly touted white vinegar, washing up liquid, and tea tree oil. This is how you can remove grime and mould within an instant.
How to clean bathroom mould and grime
Chantel instructed her followers to mix a simple solution of one cup of warm white vinegar with a quarter cup of washing up liquid and a few drops of tea tree oil. This can be added to a spray bottle.
Spray the solution all over the shower; on the shower glass and tiles. Then, using a sponge, work the solution into the surfaces.
Chantel explained: “If you haven’t yet my bathroom mix yet, this is your sign it cuts through tough grime and mould and leaves your bathroom shining.”
White vinegar is a good natural remedy for combating the development of mould, due to the vinegar’s level of acidity, specifically its acetic acid content. Acetic acid is a strong acid that can stop fungi and other microorganisms growing, so vinegar is therefore antifungal and antibacterial.
As mould is a fungal growth, vinegar will kill the bacteria. The acidity in the vinegar can also deodorise affected areas, as well as disinfecting them.
On the other hand, tea tree oil is a great way to combat mould as it’s a natural fungicide which helps to kill mould spores. Mould in Homes noted that of all the natural mould-killing remedies, tea tree oil is the most effective.
The experts also noted that although tea tree oil is natural and environmentally friendly, it can be toxic if ingested and cause irritation on sensitive skin. Ideal Home explained that tea tree oil kills mould by breaking down the cell wall of the mould spores, causing them to rupture and leak.
This will also help prevent future mould growth as the mould spores won’t grow or spread. Dr Jonathan Kirby, Mould Expert at Dryzone, told Ideal Home: “In clinical studies, tea tree oil proved effective in stopping the growth of two common strains of mould – Penicillium chrysogenum and Aspergillus fumigatus.”
