Shower doors are awkward to clean as body wash and shampoo can form into a sticky layer called soap scum, which is resistant to water but can be cleared with one cheap item. It also does not help that soap scum can react to another common stain called limescale, which is made up of hard water minerals and can bond tightly to a glass surface.
Scrubbing a shower screen will not help remove these types of stains, but the experts at Elegant Showers have shared that there is a simple product that cleans glass in just a few minutes. They said: “Sponges like those made from melamine foam gently lift grime without scratching the glass. They can tackle soap scum buildup.”
Melamine sponges, also known as magic erasers, are the best way to clean shower screens as it is made of a very abrasive material that can get into the crevices a common sponge cannot reach.
It acts like sandpaper to lift and break down greasy soap scum and thick limescale that are stuck to the surface, but will not damage or scratch glass.
This type of sponge will scrub off even the worst stains on shower glass without needing to use a chemical cleaner, but it can also be used to combine it with white vinegar.
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which can break down the minerals in limescale to soften hard soap scrum to make it much easier and quicker to clean.
It also has natural antibacterial properties, so can also get rid of any mouldy spots in the corner of your shower without needing an expensive chemical product.
How to remove stubborn stains on shower glass
To begin, simply pour one part white vinegar and one part warm water into a empty spray bottle. You can usually buy spray bottles in the gardening aisle of most supermarkets.
Then, spray a generous amount of the solution on a shower door. Then, let it sit for five minutes to give the vinegar time to break down the grime.
Once the time is up, use a melamine foam sponge to gently scrub the shower glass. Work in a circular motion, and the stains should lift away easily.
Magic erasers can be bought in the cleaning aisle of most supermarkets, but can also be bought at hardware stores or at online shops like Amazon.
When your shower glass is clean, rinse it with the shower head to get rid of any remaining soap, and then dry it with a clean cloth. Your shower door should now be sparkling beautifully and only take roughly 10 minutes to clean.
