Shower glass are annoying to clean as soap, body oils and minerals from hard water mix together, and harden into a waxy layer that cannot be dissolved without scrubbing for ages. However Jaclyn, a cleaning expert and founder of Organize By Dreams has shared you do not need any supermarket sprays or chemical cleaners as the best way to tackle shower stains is with washing up liquid.
She said: “If you have glass shower doors you know how soap scum can really build up. I wipe down our glass shower doors several times a week but my usual glass cleaner does not cut into the soap scum. So last week, I tried a new way to clean the shower doors and the method was like magic. The soap scum came right off of the shower doors. I wish I would not have waited so long to try a new cleaning method.”
It might sound bizarre, but shower door stains are difficult to remove as they form a greasy layer on the glass that will cleaned away with any water-based cleaners.
However, washing up liquid has been designed to break down grease and oils, so will loosen the stain to make it much easier to clean.
Once you use washing up liquid, it is best to combine it with white vinegar, which is acidic and antibacterial which can help get rid of hard water stains that can also stick to the glass.
Using washing up liquid combined with white vinegar is one of the most effective ways to clean shower glass, so you will not need to scrub at it or buy a pricey chemical cleaner.
How to clean a shower door using items around your home
To begin, squeeze a small amount of washing up liquid onto a sponge, then wipe it all over the shower glass door. Make sure to add a lot of the soapy substance onto particularly stained areas.
Then, place white vinegar in a empty spray bottle, and spray a generous amount all over the glass door. It is important to note that white vinegar can damage stone and marble, so be careful if you have these materials near your shower door.
Let the washing up liquid and white vinegar sit on the glass for at least 15 minutes, but you can leave it longer if it is particularly dirty.
When the time is up, simply take a clean cloth and wipe the glass. Any grime should easily slide off and the shower door will look sparkling clean.
Use the white vinegar spray on any really stained spots, but it can also be used as a polish to buff the doors so make them look really shiny and clear.
If you use this simple solution on your shower screen once a week then soap will not build up on the glass and it will stay clean for much longer.
