Shower curtains and mats stay clean without a washing machine with 1 simple item

Showers are usually easy to keep clean, but the overlooked items around them like curtains or mats can cause a bathroom to look incredibly grimy. Curtains and mats are exposed to soap every day, and without regular cleaning, dirt will build up to form a slippery layer that will make stepping out the shower difficult.

These shower items are often too bulky to fit properly in a washing machine, and even when you do wash them, they risk becoming wrinkled or dripping water around the home. Instead, Kerry Hale, a cleaning expert from Mira Showers, has shared a simple way to freshen up curtains and mats and stop them becoming mouldy, as you just need a little baking soda. Kerry said “If your shower curtain isn’t machine washable or you want to spot clean a few areas that need some TLC, you can handwash it.

She added: “Dampen a clean microfibre cloth and sprinkle a layer of baking soda over it. Use the cloth to scrub down the entire curtain, focusing on removing basic grime and dirt, and leaving set-in stains for later.”

Baking soda is an abrasive ingredient, which means it can be worked into stained material to easily scrub the away the sticky soap build up.

It is also highly absorbent, so can help loosen any moisture, mildew or horrible damp smells that are also trapped in the material and make them easier to remove.

Baking soda is a natural cleaner that is very gentle on plastic, vinyl, fabric or any other materials that are usually used to protect bathroom floors or showers.

Using baking soda is simply a cheap way to keep shower curtains and mas clean so they do not become mouldy or smelly over time.

How to deep clean shower curtains and mats

Start by giving the shower curtain or mat a good shake, then lay it out on a flat surface.

Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the material and leave it for ten minutes. This allows the baking soda to absorb any trapped moisture and loosen the grime.

Next, use a microfiber cloth to gently scrub the mat or curtain, and then make sure to wipe it thoroughly. Rinse well with warm water and hang it up to air dry.

For stubborn dark stains, spray white vinegar over the affected area after the baking soda has settled, and the reaction between the two will help lift the marks.

Your shower mats or curtains will look a lot fresher and will never become mouldy as long as you give them a quick clean at least once a month.
