Seven hypermiling tricks to save you hundreds on petrol and increase fuel economy

A hypermiling enthusiast has outlined seven little-known tips on Reddit you can use while behind the wheel to optimise this practice designed to increase fuel economy.

This driver decided to share his techniques out of frustration that people were losing previous mileage by not paying attention to their driving habits.

This Reddit user (@bootsmegamix) with two years of hypermiling experience said in his post that you should reset your odometer after filling up at a gas station and establish a fuel efficiency goal to monitor your progress more closely.

He specifies that drivers without mpg calculation on their dashboard or instrument cluster can determine their mileage by dividing miles traveled by the number of gallons poured in a tank.

Next, he notes that you should avoid pushing your car’s RPM meter past 2,500 unless you’re on a highway driving at a steady speed.

For cars that don’t have a tachometer, he suggests listening to your engine to judge how hard it’s working and when it switches gears to make necessary adjustments.

The term “hypermiling” even made it into the Oxford English Dictionary in 2008. In 2013, TV scientists from Mythbusters tested these techniques.

They found that the best they could do was increase fuel efficiency by 70 percent.
