Moisture levels in the home increase because of cooking, drying clothes and window condensation, but lowering moisture levels is key in the prevention of mould development.
According to an expert at GardeningExpress, there are seven beautiful houseplants that can reduce moisture levels in the home.
Chris Bonnett at GardeningExpress said: “Condensation is a problem a lot of households will face during the winter. Too much of it can cause some serious problems and lead to mould growth.
“The good news is there are ways to control this and prevent condensation from forming in the first place.
“If your windows are particularly steamy, it means you need to bring down the moisture levels in your home and plants can help do this.”
Certain houseplants are considered to be a “natural solution” to balancing humidity in the home.
One houseplant to consider if you notice condensation in your home is the English ivy houseplant.
English ivy is said to “remove airborne mould and other nasties”.
Best grown in bright, indirect light, the English ivy requires regular watering, but if looked after well, the plant will help to prevent mould from growing in your home.
Another houseplant to consider is the pretty peace lily that “loves the shade” and thrives in “high humidity” areas of the home.
This is why peace lilies are great additions to bathrooms and kitchens, where humidity tends to be higher than the rest of the home.
“[The peace lily] absorbs moisture through the air through its leaves and doesn’t need direct sunlight to thrive,” said Chris.
Palms are also a good addition to any home to “help control humidity and keep mould at bay”.
Great palm plants include Areca palms, bamboo palms, the lady palm, dwarf date palm and reed palm.
Boston Ferns are also great at removing moisture from the air and reducing the risk of mould formation.
“The Boston Fern thrives in moist climates and will naturally absorb the air moisture and balance out humidity levels in your home,” Chris elaborated.
