After Sunday’s 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Rams running back Kyren Williams voiced his frustration towards the team’s offense, which resulted in him accidentally taking a shot at head coach Sean McVay.
According to Michael Duarte of The California Post, McVay was asked on Monday about Williams’ postgame comments and said his running back misspoke and immediately sought him out.
“He brought it up to me, I wasn’t aware of it,” McVay said. “He’s such an energy for us, he never meant it to be, he was emotional after the game but I know this guy’s heart.”
Williams was asked why “the team couldn’t sustain energy, drive to drive,” to which he told reporters, “Can’t tell you, bro. Probably because I’m not out there.”
Despite the frustration, Williams was the Rams’ leading rusher, having 10 carries for 50 yards, while also having six targets come his way in the receiving game.
Williams added to his comments and said the team needs to continue having energy throughout the game and uplift each other on offense, defense, and special teams.
McVay said that he wasn’t aware of Williams’ postgame comments until he brought it up to him.
“He just wants to make sure that’s impacting and influencing positive change and I think probably what he said was more of like, ‘I just always want to try and be that spark,” McVay said to Duarte of his frustrated running back.
McVay went on to call his fifth-year running back a team leader and said he understood where he was coming from.
“I think the way that it was interpreted was not what his intentions were,” McVay said. “I know his teammates, and I felt that way.”
While Williams and McVay are looking to squash their Week 6 frustrations, the Rams roster won’t be able to do the same.
Los Angeles has fallen to last place in the NFC West with a 2-4 record and found out on Monday that they will be without key players on all three sides of the football field.
Duarte learned that the team will be without wide receiver Davante Adams for 6-10 weeks due to a ruptured Hamstring.
On the defensive side of the ball, the team will be without nose tackle Poona Ford for the rest of the season due to a ruptured triceps and defensive end Kobie Turner for the next 4-6 weeks due to a groin injury.
Los Angeles will also need to find a new kicker for the second week in a row, after Blake Grupe will miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL.
