'Scream Queen' Samara Weaving to star in remake of Netflix's 'ultraviolent' comedy-horror

Samara Weaving is set to star in a new thriller that’s shaping up to be one of the most eccentric horror-comedy adaptations of recent times.

The original film, 2021’s The Trip, featured Noomi Rapace of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fame and Aksel Hennie as a dysfunctional couple visiting a secluded cabin to mend their rocky relationship.

However, the plot takes a wildly dark comedic twist when both partners secretly plan to murder each other, only for their plans to be disrupted by unexpected guests.

Weaving, celebrated for her roles in Scream VI, Ready or Not, and The Babysitter series, has been cast alongside Jason Segel. The ensemble also includes Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and MMA fighter Keith Jardine.

The project is under the direction of The Lonely Island’s Jorma Taccone, with a screenplay penned by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, and production is currently taking place in Tampere, Finland.

Tommy Wirkola, who directed the original film, expressed his enthusiasm: “I can’t wait to see Jorma bring his totally singular sensibility to the material”, reports the Mirror US.

“That, combined with this killer cast, makes me beyond excited that this film will truly stand out in the cinematic landscape.”

Taccone also shared his excitement, stating: “I’m a huge fan of Tommy’s work and I love the original film. I have a totally singular sensibility, and I can’t wait to see what I bring to the material.”

For those curious about the story, the original Norwegian thriller is available for streaming on Netflix.

This film has garnered a passionate cult following, evidenced by enthusiastic comments from viewers on Letterboxd. One fan penned: “It’s part comedy, thriller, action, drama and horror.

“The tonal shifts might turn some people off but I found it worked to keep catching me off guard. I’m laughing my a** off one minute totally unprepared for the horror around the corner.”

Another cinephile commented: “It’s hyperviolent yet so exaggerated that you’ll never mistake it for a serious tone, the tongue is firmly hammered in cheek with fun surprises and builds up the extremities to an exciting and unrestrained finale.

“The gore is practical, quite painful and incredibly well done.”

Last but not least, an avid movie-goer expressed their unexpected delight: “I don’t know how this got onto my watchlist, but I’m so glad it did. This was perfectly paced – not a single sequence wasted, every minute building on the last in terms of impact.

“It’s beautifully balanced across so many genres: a hilarious dark comedy, a nail-biting thriller, and a well-choreographed action film splattered with blood and guts and gore.”

Are you intrigued enough to check out The Trip, or will you hold out for Hollywood’s reimagining?

The Trip is available to stream on Netflix.
