Sarah Ferguson has been dealt a “huge blow” this Christmas as a result of her ex husband Prince Andrew’s latest scandal.
It was revealed earlier this month that the Duke of York, 64, had been friends with Chinese businessman and now suspected spy Yang Tengbo, going as far as to invite him into royal palaces.
While Andrew’s office said the duke ceased contact with the businessman when concerns were first raised, and never shared any “sensitive” information with him, the scandal has rocked the duke’s image again and resulted in him backtracking on his Christmas plans to stay out of the spotlight.
This means the duke will not be at Sandringham with the Royal Family this year, with his ex wife Sarah Ferguson – who still lives with him – also not set to attend as a result, reported by The Mirror.
One royal expert believes this will be a huge hit for the Duchess of York, 65, after she was invited back to the Sandringham celebrations by King Charles last year.
Former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond told OK!: “This will be a blow for Fergie. She was so effusive last Christmas and was clearly delighted to be included in the family festivities after so many years in exile.
“But her loyalty has always been to Andrew and she will stick by his side… wherever they spend the day.”
Jennie continued: “I think the King has a soft spot for Fergie, especially after their shared cancer experience. She always brings a spot of fun to proceedings.
“So he will probably be a little sad that she will now stay away from Sandringham, to stand shoulder to shoulder with her ex.”
Prince Andrew and Sarah are expected to now spend Christmas Day at their Royal Lodge home on the Windsor estate.
Their oldest daughter Princess Beatrice, 36, and her family will still spend the big day this Wednesday at Sandringham with other members of the Royal Family. Their second daughter Princess Eugenie is expected to spend the day with her in-laws.
Prince Andrew has been seen very few times since the latest scandal and pulled out of the Royal Family’s pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace last Thursday.
His office said earlier this month: “The Duke of York followed advice from HMG (His Majesty’s Government) and ceased all contact with the individual after concerns were raised.
“The duke met the individual through official channels, with nothing of a sensitive nature ever discussed. He is unable to comment further on matters relating to national security.”
