A number of major banks will close dozens of branches across the UK this year. They have cited a change in customer behaviour as the reason behind the closures, with an increasing number of people choosing to bank online or use mobile app services.
Santander, Halifax, Lloyds and TSB will shut a combined total of 384 bank branches in 2025. Santander has confirmed the closure of 77, Halifax 100 and Lloyds 96, while TSB has announced that 11 branches will close for good across its UK estate. Meanwhile, some banks have reduced the hours at a number of branches to decrease operating costs.
Recent figures show that mobile banking use has surged in recent years, with around 87% of UK adults now using at least one form of digital banking. This equates to just short of 50 million people across the nation.
However, the shift to digital banking has raised concerns amogn people who may still rely on face-to-face services, including older and vulnerable customers. Those who are less confident with technology, or require access to cash, may be impacted by the closures.
