Sandro Tonali’s ‘secret’ Newcastle contract clause truth as talks set | Football | Sport

Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is set to continue discussions over an improved contract, but the club’s bosses are not overly concerned about his future following an unreported extension clause last year.

It has come to light that Tonali’s current contract, originally set to end in 2028, was extended to 2029 with the option of a further year until 2030, as reported by the Daily Mail. Despite this, there are still planned talks with Tonali’s representatives and new sporting director Ross Wilson.

Previously linked with Juventus and AC Milan, the Italian star’s price tag is believed to be well beyond the financial reach of both Serie A clubs. The midfielder also feels a sense of loyalty to Newcastle, who supported him during his FIFA ban for illegal betting last year, according to the Chronicle.

When asked about a potential return to Italy earlier this month, Tonali said: “You can never know what will happen, I tell everyone it’s possible.

“I’m not closing the door on Italy; it’s my country. Maybe not now because I’ve found my balance at Newcastle, but the league is getting better and better, the level of the teams is rising.”

Tonali’s reputation has been on the rise over the past year, with the star thriving since returning from his ban. England and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes praised him, saying: “I love Tonali at Newcastle. Oh, he can run. He’s been brilliant. Very good.

“I think Declan Rice can score goals, I just don’t think he does it enough. I prefer Tonali.”

Eddie Howe has emphasised the importance of a certain player in his team’s future plans, stating: “Technically, he is an outstanding player. To see that technical ability we want him to get the ball more. Playing as a No. 8 we need more of a goal threat too.”

This implies that Wilson will be acutely aware of the necessity to secure a deal that would eliminate any uncertainty surrounding Tonali’s future.
