Samsung Galaxy rival teases exact date for major new Android smartphone launch

Smartphones have become part of our daily lives, handling everything from calls to WhatsApp, from shooting photos to watching Netflix, and from navigating with Google Maps to paying with Apple Pay. If only these phones hadn’t grown so enormous.

That seems to be what Android phone maker OnePlus has been thinking. The firm has officially teased its next major device, and it looks as though it’s going to be marketed on its smaller dimensions.

OnePlus posted to Chinese social media site Weibo officially announcing the existence of the OnePlus 13T, which will launch in China on April 24 at 2:30pm local time, which is 8:30am on the same day in the UK.

Translated from Chinese, the phone is described as having a “brand-new design” with a “light and thin feel”, with the accompanying video showing off the phone in full. The phone is a sibling device to the OnePlus 13 released early this year, and is set to beat Samsung’s upcoming very thin Galaxy S25 Edge to market.

The video shows the phone black, pink and silver with a much-different camera design to the OnePlus 13, which had a distinctive circular camera module. The 13T had vertically aligned dual cameras with a bump that also has another sensor and a flash.

On the side of the phone is a button that OnePlus has confirmed replaces the alert slider seen on most previous OnePlus phones. It appears it will act much like the iPhone 16’s Action Button.

In fact, the 13T phone looks a lot like the iPhone 16 from the video, with flat sides, rounded corners and dual cameras, plus that button. It’s a trend we’ve seen with many popular phones of late, with the Samsung Galaxy S25 and Pixel 9 phones all looking quite similar, and quite like Apple’s iPhone.

OnePlus said in another Weibo post that the OnePlus 13T has a 6.32-inch screen and an “extremely narrow bezel design” with a “smooth feel” to the glass on the back of the phone. If the OnePlus 13T makes it to the UK, it looks like it’ll be similar in size to the Samsung Galaxy S25, which has a 6.2-inch screen.

The company has also said the battery will be at least 6,000mAh, which is very large and could prove a selling point.

No other specs have been announced, and it will be interesting to see if the OnePlus 13T runs the same Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset as the OnePlus 13 or if it’ll be pitched in a lower price bracket.

Indeed, the phone’s price in general could make or break it. OnePlus charges £849 for the OnePlus 13 and it’s not available on contract in the UK, so if you want it, you have to fork out upfront for it. Many tech enthusiasts say they want smaller phones, but Apple canned its mini phones after only two years with the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini, and continues to sell larger Plus models instead.
