Samsung beats Apple with cheap new iPad rival launching later this week

We’ve all been expecting Apple to announce news of new tablets but it seems the US firm has been beaten to the chase by a release from Samsung. It’s just been announced that a refreshed version of the more wallet-friendly Galaxy Tab S6 Lite is launching this week with this device featuring a 10.4-inch screen, fast quad-core processor, lengthy 14-hour battery life and single-lens rear camera. Samsung is also boasting that it gets a lightweight design with a premium metallic finish.

It’s fully compatible with Samsung’s digital stylus – allowing you to scribble on the screen without using your fingers – and there are dual speakers which are powered by AKG and offer Dolby Atmos audio.

It comes in three colours including Oxford Gray, Chiffon Pink and Mint and will be available from March 28.

Right now there’s no word on the price and which markets it will hit first but, if and when it does arrive in the UK, expect to pay around £350 to own it. Samsung says more news on a regional rollout will be announced soon.

“At Samsung, we understand that life is fast, work is dynamic and consumers need a device that can keep up with their busy everyday lifestyles,” said Junho Park, VP and Head of the Galaxy Ecosystem Product Planning Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (2024) and its S Pen are the ultimate companions for seamlessly blending productivity with entertainment and creativity, enabling people to do more of what they enjoy on the go.”

If you’re still holding out for an iPad then many experts still believe new models could arrive imminently.

Apple didn’t launch any new tablets last year which means they are long overdue for a refresh.

If the iPad is rebooted within the next few months expect to see faster processors, better displays and longer battery life included. Some experts are now suggesting April will be the month for the big reveal.

Apple has also just announced the date for its WWDC Developers Conference and there’s always a chance it could use this keynote as a platform to show off new iPads.

That event kicks off on June 10 so watch this space.
