A bag that is approved for free hand luggage by both Ryanair and easyJet has been discounted to just £14 on Amazon for a limited time. The carry-on bag from the brand Hayayu expands from being suitable to use as a small luggage item for Ryanair, measuring 40 x 20 x 25cm, to easyJet’s slightly larger free baggage allowance of 45 x 36 x 20cm.
The bag, which usually retails for £29.92, has a rating of 4.6 out of a possible five stars on Amazon based on previous customer reviews. To see whether this one is as good as the reviews say, reporter Fran Winston tested it on a Ryanair flight between Dublin and London.
While the Irish airline might have announced plans to increase the size of its hand luggage by 20% (to 40 x 30 x 20cm), until the rules are officially in place, passengers must still ensure their bags meet the current requirements, or they could be charged excess fees. As part of a joint statement from A4E airlines, Ryanair said: “All A4E airlines will roll out the guaranteed dimensions and have them in place by the end of the 2025 summer season.”
Therefore, to avoid additional charges, Fran had to use the bag in its smaller size. However, if you want to take it on as easyJet luggage, all you need to do is unzip it to make it bigger.
As she was travelling for work, it was important for her that she could fit in a laptop and enough clothes for a one-night trip. “When the bag arrived, I measured it because it looked much larger than the bags I had previously tested,” she said. “I was concerned that it might be too big, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it met Ryanair’s requirements.”
The bag fit both in the sizer and under the seat in front.
Fran could pack her 15.6″ laptop, plus a change of clothes, toiletries, electronics, and passport.
“With clever packing, you could easily fit four or five days’ clothes in,” she added. However, there is a downside to its expandable nature. Fran explained: “The temptation to overstuff this is huge, but if you can be disciplined, this is perfect for those short breaks or work trips.”
Fran liked that the bag had internal and external pockets, as well as a security pocket integrated into the strap. “It is fully lined, and one of the internal pockets also has a heavier waterproof plastic lining, which makes it ideal for chargers and other small electrical items,” she said.
As a result, even when travelling in the rain, Fran found her belongings stayed perfectly dry. Fran added: “The handles are reinforced with a leather strip, which looks incredibly stylish and ensures they won’t fray or snap.”
The bag comes in six colours, including black, white, and green. While our reporter tested it in pink, she admits the black may be the most practical for keeping clean while travelling.
Although the bag is currently on sale, Amazon has not specified how long this discount will last. You can read Fran’s full review of the Hayayu expandable bag here.
