Russia on tsunami alert as huge magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes off coast of Japan


Russia is on tsunami alert after a huge magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Japan.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre said the earthquake, which had a depth of 13km, struck 411km northeast of Kushiro, Japan (population 183,000) and 107km east-southeast off Kuril’sk, Russia.

Last Quake, an independent scientific organization and provider of real-time earthquake information, tweeted: “M6.5 occurred 113km SE of Kuril’sk (Russian Federation) 10 min ago (local time 19:15:16).”

News agency RT India also tweeted a map showing where the earthquake hit, writing alongside this: “Huge M6.5 Earthquake Hits Russia’s Kuril’sk – EMSC informs public in Japan & US to follow tsunami alert updates.”

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the southeast coast of Etorofu Island.

These were magnitude 2.4 in Central and western Mino, Gifu Prefecture; magnitude 3.8 off the coast of Iwate Prefecture; and magnitude 3.5 off the coast of Ibaraki Prefecture.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre later wrote online that a tsunami is not expected.

The JMA has also listed three smaller earthquakes that were recorded in the two hours before the biggest one hit.
