Ukraine launched a stunning long-range drone attack on a  Russian naval base on the Caspian Sea.

Several drones bore down on the main base of the Russian Navy’s Caspian Flotilla in Dagestan, in the Caucasus.

The naval base in the port of Kaspiysk is approximately 868 miles from Ukraine’s border as the crow flies.

Video images captured the moment of the dramatic attack as it unfolded on Wednesday.

In one clip, a UAV flies low over the harbour and slams into a row of docked Russian warships.

After the impact, a huge ball of flames can be seen rising skywards. There is currently no official confirmation of any damage.

This is the first time that Ukraine has targeted a military base in Dagestan.

It is believed the attack was carried out by an ultra-light Ukrainian drone aircraft, A-22 Flying Fox.

According to open data sources, units of Russia’s coastal troops, including the Marine Corps, are based at Kaspiysk.

The flotilla carried out missile attacks on Ukraine, and the 177th Marine Regiment took part in battles in the Kherson and Zaporozhzhia regions of Ukraine.

Sergey Melikov, the head of the government in Dagestan, said one drone had been shot down over the port.

However, residents reported seeing several drones in the skies above the port.

In a statement, Melikov said: “The circumstances of the incident are now being clarified.

“There is an operational headquarters and I am in constant contact with the responsible authorities.

“I want to assure that all decisions will be made in a timely manner for the safety of the residents of the republic.”
