Runaway cows block traffic on upstate NY thruway during blizzard

Mooooove out of the way!

A pair of runaway cows snarled traffic on an upstate New York thruway and created an udderly comedic scene as drivers tried to corral the bovines in the middle of a snowstorm.

Just after noon Monday, while a blizzard was making landfall in Buffalo, at least two cows made a break for it and barged out of a livestock trailer in the area of Ridge Road and Route 179, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.

While authorities were “working to corral them,” the NYSTA warned that drivers in the area “should expect delays” — on top of the ones they were already dealing with because of inclement weather.

The bucking bovines kept ambling back and forth on the grassy median, according to WIVB 4’s broadcast of the bizarre scene.

A group managed to circle around one cow, with each man crouching low so as not to spook the animal, but it made a quick break and evaded them all.

One fed-up responder even used a truck to try and block the heifer, but it easily sauntered around the vehicle.

Dumbfounded drivers were doing double-takes while they inched by the scene.

“The traffic slowed down and we couldn’t see right away what was happening, and as we got closer my boyfriend’s mom said, are those deer in the center? And as we got a little bit closer she goes, I think those are cows!” Michelle Frechette told the outlet.

“We were just a little dumbfounded because that certainly is not an everyday event,” Frechette added.

“My GPS said there was an accident, so I was expecting to see a couple cars in a ditch or something. But it ended up being a couple of cows in the median,” Keith Bradley said.

Despite the apparent hullabaloo, the cows were back in their trailer by 12:30 p.m., according to the NYSTA, which still warned that “delays exist” and urged drivers to proceed with “caution.”

The commuters weren’t the only ones having a field day with the bolting bovines. Online users also got a kick out of the unusual traffic delay.

“Udderly ridiculous, just mooove on over. I heard the McDonald’s around there isn’t serving Big Mac’s tonight,” one user wrote on X.

“Drivers should moooooove outta the way!” another teased.

No crashes or injuries linked to the cattle jailbreak were reported.
