Rugs stay clean and dust-free without a washing machine if you do 1 easy task

Rugs can often be too big and clunky to properly fit into the washing machine, but there is another easy way to disinfect them thanks to the sunny weather. Most of us settle for a quick vacuum, but in summer, deep cleaning your rugs is essential as pollen and debris can get trapped in the fibres, which can leave a room dusty and uncomfortable.

However, Sobi, a expert from Rich Class Decor has shared hanging rugs outside in the sun is one of the easiest ways to get them clean again. He said: “One often-overlooked aspect of rug maintenance is the simple act of airing them out in the sun. This age-old practice isn’t just for vintage or handmade rugs—it’s beneficial for all types.”

It might seem simple, but many people don’t realise that the ultraviolet rays in sunlight act as a natural disinfectant, killing bacteria and germs that build up on rugs from everyday foot traffic

During allergy season, dust, pet dander, and pollen will bury themselves in fabric, but hanging a rug outside will air it out and easily get rid of any debris.

Rugs can also absorb moisture on humid days, leading to musty odours in the home, but airing them out helps keep them smelling fresh.

Airing out a rug will also fluff up the fibres to prevent it from becoming flat and matted from everyday use.

It is an effective way to keep rugs clean during the dustiest and most pollen-filled time of year without relying on harsh chemical sprays or costly cleaning services.

What is the best way to air out a rug?

Before you hang up your rug, it can help to give it a thorough shake to help loosen the fibres to make sure you get rid of even the most stubborn dust and debris

Then, drape the rug over a clothesline. Leave it for a maximum of three hours and make sure to flip the rug over at some point to ensure both sides are aired out.

Sobi said: “While sunlight is beneficial, too much exposure can fade colours and weaken fibres. Aim for airing your rug in the sun for one to three hours at a time, and avoid the hottest part of the day to prevent colour fading.”

Try to hang up your rug in the morning before 10am if you can as noon is when the sun is at its highest and its strongest.

The ideal day to clean a rug is on a dry, breezy day with some sun. Avoid humid weather, as it can cause the rug to retain moisture, and steer clear of extremely hot days, as strong sunlight can fade the colours over time.

Taking the time to air out your rug is an easy way to clean it so it will stay fresh, sanitised and allergen-free throughout summer, so you can keep your home debris-free without much effort.
