Manchester United have been handed a double injury boost ahead of their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Saturday, with Ruben Amorim confirming that Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha are both available for selection. The pair missed last weekend’s Manchester derby after sustaining injuries in the first half of the victory against Burnley three weeks ago. However, Diogo Dalot remains sidelined.
The defender pulled out of the Portugal squad at the start of the month due to muscle soreness. Lisandro Martinez is making progress in his recovery, having started training on the grass seven months after he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. United head coach Ruben Amorim admitted United have missed Martinez’s ‘aggression’.
“Dalot is out,” said the Red Devils manager in Friday’s press conference. “Mason is in the squad, him and Cunha are in the squad. Licha still out. I think that is it.
“It’s really important [that Martinez is nearing a return]. When you have that injury you recover a lot of times very fast and then there is a boring part where it looks like you don’t go to the next step.
“We miss Licha a lot. We miss the aggression in this moment, how aggressive he is on everything he does, we miss him. But he’s always there in every meeting, even in training, he stays there to watch the training. I think we need Licha in this team.”
United will be hoping to extend their unbeaten home record against Chelsea, which stands at 12 matches.
The west Londoners last tasted victory at Old Trafford in May 2013, two days before United announced the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager.
Alejandro Garnacho, who made his United debut as a 17-year-old against Chelsea, is set to return to his former club less than a month after he left.
Amorim was hesitant to comment on Garnacho’s time at United, saying: “Garnacho is not our player. I’m really happy with Mason and Cunha returning. The rest you have to talk with the Chelsea manager.”
Tyrell Malacia remains stranded at United following the closure of the major European transfer windows. Although the Saudi Pro League and Greek Super League are still open for transfers, Malacia will only be joining the United under-21s for training sessions.
“He’s returning to the contact with teammates and the ball in the under-21s and then we will see,” added Amorim.
