An investigation has been launched after a Royal Navy recruit suddenly died at a military base. A 38-year-old man died after training at HMS Raleigh in Cornwall. The individual, who has not been named, died last week (March 11), but it has now been confirmed that both Devon and Cornwall Police and Health and Safety Executive (HSE) are investigating the incident.
His next of kin have been informed. HMS Raleigh, near Torpoint, is a training establishment that runs the 10-week basic training course for ratings recruits. A Royal Navy spokesperson said an investigation into the circumstances of the death will take place. The spokesperson said: “It is with great sadness that we can confirm that a member of the Royal Navy died at HMS Raleigh following routine training on Tuesday 11 March.
“Our thoughts are with the family and all those affected at this sad time. An investigation into the circumstances will take place and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time”.
HMS Raleigh is the biggest Royal Navy training base in the south-west of England.
According to the Royal Navy website, HMS Raleigh “provides comprehensive training programs that equip new recruits with the essential skills and knowledge needed for a successful naval career”.
It continues: “This training establishment offers a ten-week Initial Naval Training program where recruits develop core values and essential skills, and this combines classroom learning with the latest technology across a range of simulated scenarios.”
