Meghan Markle’s  bombshell  interview to Vanity Fair in 2017 was a “warning sign” the duchess would “break rules” just three years before she and Prince Harry left the Royal Family in 2020, a royal commentator has claimed.

The Duchess of Sussex’s interview with the US magazine came at a time when the press was big on their relationship and rumours regarding a possible wedding were swirling in the UK and the US.

Meghan was reportedly told to steer clear of controversial subjects like politics, or her relationship with the prince. However, the magazine ran the front cover story with the headline “Wild About Harry” and heavily focused on their relationship rather than her work as an actress at the time – which repotedly left Buckingham Palace stunned.

In 2021, royal commentaror Daniela Elser said the Vanity Fair interview was a critical moment which showed that Meghan’s entrance into the Royal Family was not going to be “smooth sailing”.

She wrote for news.com.au: “Rather, with her Vanity Fair appearance, she didn’t so much break that mould as chicly smash it to smithereens, trouncing the unspoken omerta that royal girlfriends had thus far diligently adhered to. Were the warning signs there, even then, that the introduction of Meghan into the royal world was never, ever going to be smooth sailing? Meghan walked into the Palace as not so much an open book but an open, glossy magazine feature story. It’s just such a shame that no one spent more time reading it.”
