Meghan Markle has joined hundreds of public figures including Stephen Fry to call for a “prohibition” on the development of “superintelligent” artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The Duchess of Sussex has added her name to the long list of celebrities, scientists, politicians and religious leaders warning against the “unsafe” development of AI that is “more intelligent than most humans”.
The unlikely alliance, which also included right-wing pundit and former ally of Donald Trump Steve Bannon, was formed by the Future for Life Institute (FLI), according to the Financial Times, with boss Max Tegmark explaining: “It is our humanity that brings us all together here … More and more people are starting to think that the biggest threat isn’t the other company or even the other country but maybe the machines we are building.” Prince Harry was also among the signees, and added in a personal note that “the future of AI should serve humanity not replace it. I believe the true test of progress will not be how fast we move, but how wisely we steer. There is no second chance.” Harry and Meghan have both previously advocated for online safety, especially regarding children, and urged social media companies to introduce tougher content moderation policies.
