Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have stepped back from royal life in 2020 for more financial independence and privacy, however, they haven’t always necessarily stuck to this.
While they have been making their own money through Netflix deals, investments and business ventures, privacy hasn’t always been the couple’s top priority, as seen by the fact they invited cameras into their home for their Netflix docuseries Harry and Meghan in 2022.
The prince, 40, then exposed a number of private moments from his life in his 2023 memoir Spare, ranging from previous drug-taking habits to exposing private family conversations.
However, one royal commentator believes this approach to privacy may be set to change for the couple, who have become increasingly tight-lipped over matters this year.
While some believe they have held back from any more royal revelations as a result of King Charles and Princess Kate’s cancer struggles this year, one expert believes it could be a change in tactic by the couple.
This insight comes after the couple reportedly brought a new Portugal holiday home within the last few months, which representatives of the couple have neither confirmed or denied.
Gareth Russell, a royal commentator, spoke exclusively to GB News about why Harry and Meghan, 43, are not speaking publicly about their new property.
He told GB News: “Portugal may be something they’re planning to keep more private because they have been quite reticent in talking about it at all. Whereas the Montecito purchase was fairly public. But who knows?
“Whether they go private or public with the new Portuguese residence will be a good indicator of where they’re going in terms of how public or private they’ll be going forward, and whether it will be a change to what we have seen in the past.”
While the couple may now have invested in a European home, just over a year after they were told to leave Frogmore Cottage in Windsor for good, the new property is not believed to be a replacement of their home in Montecito.
Instead, it is believed the home will be a perfect holiday retreat for the family, with it being just a stone throw away from Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie’s Portugal pad.
It is also believed that by having a home just a few hours away from the UK by plane could help the prince see his family in the UK more often, despite having fractured relationships, as well as creating an opportunity for his children Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three, to get to know some of their relatives.
No comment has been made by the couple’s representatives about the Portugal house purchase.
