Many gardeners are hoping to see beautiful blooms from their plants. But, the necessary care for plants varies depending on their type. When it comes to roses, one trick will give your flowers an extra spot of colour and make them much stronger. While the hack couldn’t be any simpler, it really does go a long way, and the sooner you do it, the better.
Dr Lauren Martinez, horticulturlist at the National Botanical Institute explained that the “the first six weeks of spring determine up to 70% of your bloom quality”. According to the Met Office, spring commenced around March 20, meaning we are currently three weeks into this crunch period. As rose plants remain in their important growth phase, banana peels are an absolute gem to use.
Garden expert Thomas Wilson said: “Banana peels provide natural phosphorus and potassium, essential for strong rose growth,” making it one of the most effective natural boosters for your plants.
There are two ways to make use of the scraps as a booster. The first is to bury chopped banana peels between one and two inches below the soil around your rose bushes.
Alternatively, you can create a simple tea by soaking peels in water for three days and then going in and watering your plants with the liquid. Both approaches provide an easy means to nurture the plants this season.
As gardeners will know, spring is significant for plants including roses with Dr Lauren Martinez noting that “just as we need extra care after winter, roses require special attention as they awaken from dormancy.”
Therefore, you’re bound to see the blooming potential of your rose plants enhanced throughout the season by using the quick and easy technique at this crucial time when they are especially receptive to the extra nutrients.
As we are already nearly a month into spring, making use of your banana peels now, whichever way you choose, will be more beneficial to your rose plants than ever before. So make sure to have a look through your kitchen waste now before getting rid of it.
