Amazon are reportedly eyeing up Wayne Rooney as their star pundit for Manchester City’s Champions League face-off with Real Madrid, reports the Mirror. The broadcaster has also been in talks about the former England captain becoming a regular feature among their big names.
While nothing has been officially confirmed, securing Rooney would be a significant win for Amazon. The company shares Champions League rights and showcases the top Tuesday games, with City’s match against Real Madrid being the standout fixture of the knockout phase.
Amazon already boasts a strong line-up including Daniel Sturridge, Alan Shearer, and presenter Gabby Logan. Adding Rooney to this mix, particularly for the City-Real Madrid game, would be a major boost.
The hope is that he will become a long-term addition to Amazon’s football coverage. Rooney, 39, has proven himself an impressive pundit during stints on Sky, BBC, and TNT Sports.
Since leaving his managerial role at Plymouth, the ex-Manchester United star and Champions League winner has become one of the most sought-after names in punditry. He has received numerous offers, with Match of the Day keen to sign him up for their revamped show next season.
Sky also hold him in high regard, with Rooney recently offering strong views on Gary Neville’s Overlap show.
TNT featured him last season during Everton’s match against Manchester United, both clubs he has played for. Former Manchester United star Rooney was known for his outspoken nature as a player, but with five title wins under his belt, he can also provide an expert perspective on his old teams.
Rooney clinched the Champions League with United in 2009 and secured the Premier League title five times at Old Trafford.
