Residents fume at 'eyesore' in local square and compare it to 'Teletubby land'

Locals in Worcestershire have slammed their town centre’s new artificial grass squares and compared the new design to the children’s TV show Teletubbies.

The square in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, which has a series of concrete blocks covered in strips of artificial lawn has been called a “waste of money” and “depressing” to look at.

On Twitter, now known as X, one man who claims he is “new to the area”, posted an image of the fake grass already falling off the constructions, with the accompanying comment: “Some genius in Bromsgrove District Council had the bright idea to cover the “town hub” in this c***. Well done.”

A user commented on the negative post claiming: “It’s evil Teletubbyland with sharp corners.”

The council’s website states: “BirdBox is Bromsgrove’s space for live events, pop-up dining, arts and crafts demonstrations, wellbeing activities and, well, whatever you want it to be! In between events it’s there to be enjoyed by everyone.”

The community space was originally meant for food and drinks stalls but remains empty.

David Woliter, 58, told Mail Online: “The only use I see is kids climbing over it. Kids play football against it but it’s an eyesore in my opinion and it has cost the council quite a lot of money.”

Whereas another resident claimed it was under-used. Amy Taylor, 27, said: ‘It is kind of a non-thing. They did a lot at Christmas, having food stalls and the lights, but now it feels a bit dead.

Not all locals agreed the artificial lawn square was an “eye-saw”, Val Rogers, 71, a retired teacher, said: “I think it’s very pleasant. It is nice to see it and the kids like to play on it.”

Insurance worker Claire White, 34, said: “My little girl likes it. She immediately wanted to try and climb the steps. It’s green, it looks really nice and it is certainly better than a lot of concrete.”

Whereas resident Luke argued: “I’m a hater of fake grass but it’s only temporary as an event space. Top soil costs a lot and this made it functional before the levelling up projects takes the space. Worked well for outdoor space during COVID but should be better maintained.”

Bromsgrove is a traditional market town located in north Worcestershire surrounded by rolling countryside hills, and close to National Trust beauty spot Clent Hills.

Events throughout the year take place in the town’s parks and open spaces including the town centre with its traditional, long high street.

Express.co.uk has approached Bromsgrove District Council for comment.
