A cleaning influencer has shared one of her top five tips for helping to get tough stains out of carpets.

Whether you’ve dropped food, spilled a drink or brought mud in front outside, there’s a common toiletry that could be your saviour.

Sophie Webb from Sydney, Australia, who goes by @what.sophie.does on social media, shared five cleaning tips for her followers on TikTok back in October 2024, including how to remove carpet stains.

Turn your attention to shaving foam.

Sophie claimed that this is all you need to remove stains.

She explained: “Rub a little bit of shaving cream into carpet stains and watch it work wonders.”

Shaving cream can help cut through stains as it contains similar active ingredients to many household cleaning products, such as surfactants and emulsifiers.

These help lift and break down stains by trapping dirt and grime within the form

Surfactants are the primary cleaning compounds in shaving foam, which can help loosen dirt particles in the carpet.

Using a foam helps to lift the dirt particles out of the carpet, capturing them, and making them easier to wipe away.

It’s recommended to test the shaving cream on a small area first. The hack usually works best on surface level stains on different fabrics.

After applying the shaving cream, gently wipe away with a damp cloth, or a diluted cleaning solution depending on the stain.

Ryan Knoll, professional cleaner and owner of Tidy Casa, told Homes & Gardens: “I only learned recently that shaving foam can be a surprisingly effective way to clean carpet stains, but I love it.

“The foam easily breaks down grease and other substances that cling to the carpet fibers, making them easier to remove. All you have to do is apply, allow it to sit for a few minutes, and then scrub the area dry with a clean towel.”

He did note that to make sure the hack works, is that you need to use shaving foam, not gel or soap-based products.
