If the idea of living on a remote Irish island in a gorgeous older home sounds like your dream, then it could become your reality.
Ireland has launched an ambitious project to breathe life back into its remote island communities with the Our Living Islands Policy launched last year.
As part of bringing back the life of these islands through infrastructure and investment, the Vacant Property Refurbishment grant offers people up to €50,000 (£41,395) to refurbish vacant and derelict homes on these scenic coastal islands.
If your renovation takes more, a top up grant of up to €20,000 (£16,558)is available.
In order to qualify for the grant however there are a few hoops to jump through.
First, you need either proof of ownership or evidence of active negotiations to buy, and then you need to live in the home as your primary residence or rent it.
You will also need proof that the property has been vacant for at least two years and was built in the years up to and including 2007.
The grant will not pay you to move to one of these 30 remote islands – it is purely to refurbish a home on one of them – and you will also need to ensure you have the right to live in Ireland, as another condition is you live there for ten years.
However, the grant offers an incredible opportunity for people passionate about a doer-upper. Some of the gorgeous islands with homes available include Arranmore, Clare Island Bere Island and Inis Mór. All are equally stunning with rugged coasts and wildlife, and perfect for people looking to slow down and live quietly.
Wayne Mills, the Head of Operations at Seven Seas Worldwide said: “This program is for everyone, but it’s especially targeting remote workers and digital nomads.
“The Irish government is pledging to improve transport links, internet coverage, and health services as part of an overall plan to invest in the islands’ future.
“They’d love to attract remote workers to diversify the islands’ economies, so if you’re looking for a peaceful yet productive lifestyle, consider having Ireland’s breathtaking coastal views as your office backdrop!”
