Real meaning behind road sign that people often get confused by

Getting clued up on road signs is a big part of getting your driving licence, from being tested on them in your theory test and while out on the road. But, with so many signs to keep track of, even the most experienced drivers can find them confusing sometimes. Thankfully an expert is offering some clarity.

There are several obscure road signs that motorists don’t often see on their day-to-day travels. A driving expert has said that people also often get confused about the meaning behind the signs.

Recently she clarified what a blue sign with a ‘T’ shape on it means. The sign has a blue background with a white recentagle shape and a red smaller recentangle shape above it.

Annie, a registered driving instructor and viral advisor who boasts 1.2million TikTok followers, explained: “People get mixed up with this sign. Some think it’s warning you about a T junction. Some people think it means no entry and some people think it means no through road.”

“It’s really important that you do know what this sign means,” she insisted to drivers.

Annie, who loves sharing her knowledge with the world and helping people improve their driving skills, further added: “If you’ve got a relative who lives down this road, you don’t want to think this means no entry. If it was no entry it’d be a circle sign.”

She noted that a ‘no entry’ sign is a red circle with a white rectangle in the middle. Explaining to people who confused the sign for a T junction, Annie said: “If it was warning you about a T junction it wouldn’t be in the recentangle, square shape, it would be in a triangle shape because triangle signs give warnings.”

Confirming what the sign means, Annie said: “This sign is giving you information. It’s telling you that the road you’re about to drive into is a no through road, like a cul de sac when you get to the end of the road and there’s no more road.”

While it means a no through road, it is often referred to as a dead end. Surepass Driving School statest that if you see this sign, you should avoid entering if you seek a through route, as you will need to turn back. You find this sign at the entrance of roads that do not connect to other roads, indicating a dead end.

Commenting on Annie’s video one individual said: “I’ve been driving since 1976 and it’s a dead end.” One other shared how they remember what the sign means, adding: “It’s a dead end. If you carry on your dead because there’s no more road or your in somebody’s house.”

Another said: “I just see it as, if you go down this road to a house or something, you’ll have to turn around to get out again.” One individual who lives in a cul de sack said: “I could do with one of these for my cul de sack, might stop people with no spacial awareness comin down and trying to turn round.”

Thanking Annie, one wrote: “Passed my theory today with help of your videos.” Another shared: “Moving back to the UK in September and need to learn to drive! I’m so nervous for the theory test.”
