According to Twin Home Experts, having one common thing in your garden can actually make it “much easier” for rats to access your property. If you want to avoid rodents from taking over your home then you need to keep an eye on two simple things.
In a TikTok video, the experts explained that rats can get into your attic “super easy and fast” by using a simple trick. If you have trees very close to your house, then you may want to pay attention, as it could be problematic.
He said they can climb right up the tree and jump onto your roof, and then jump into vents and access the home through other cracks and openings. It may seem wild to imagine, but he says it’s “easy” for them to do.
In the explainer clip, he said there’s also another popular entry point they use that even experts can miss from time-to-time. If you have a property where roofs overlap slightly, he said this can be great for rats.
This is because the rats will scurry in between the gap, and find a way inside the house. They’ll either find a small hole to gain access or they’ll chew their way through certain materials too.
This is why it’s best to try and cover up gaps or exposed areas as best as you can. As much as wear and tear is a normal part of life, you’d be surprised what pesky pests can manage to access with a little help.
So, it’s best to keep these things in mind when maintaining your property, as you never know when rats are around. Taking measures to prevent them getting in is always advised.
How to stop rats entering the attic
If you’re worried about rats entering your attic, there are a few things you need to do. First, inspect the area thoroughly. Look for any potential cracks, holes or gaps around pipes, wires, vents and where the roof meets the walls.
You can use steel wool, caulk or expanding foam to fill small openings and holes. When it comes to larger openings, it’s best to opt for materials like sheet metal, cement or wire mesh to create a firm barrier.
To make the property as rat-proof as possible, it’s also best to put wire mesh over any vents that lead into the attic. This will help to prevent any pests from being able to get inside.
