Napoli striker Rasmus Hojlund offered his congratulations to Manchester United forward Benjamin Sesko after the Slovenian netted his second goal in consecutive matches against Sunderland. Hojlund departed Old Trafford on transfer deadline day following concerns that his role as first-choice striker was under threat. Sesko arrived from RB Leipzig with the task of filling the Dane’s boots in the starting XI.
Hojlund initially wanted to stay at United, but was eventually willing to leave Old Trafford if it meant reduced playing time. Following his displacement by Sesko, the striker agreed to join Napoli on a temporary deal until the end of the season. Before last weekend, Sesko had failed to find the net for the Red Devils since his switch from Germany.
Nevertheless, he broke his duck with a close-range effort at Brentford during the 3-1 reverse. Thankfully for Sesko, his second strike for the club proved far more memorable as he extended United’s lead against Sunderland in a 2-0 triumph.
Following the result, Sesko took to Instagram to share his joy, posting: “What a feeling. A goal at the Stretford End and three points to go with it. Let’s build on this. Hungry for more!”.
Hojlund might have been excused for harbouring resentment towards Sesko for scoring for United after taking his place in the squad. Rather than showing bitterness, the Dane offered his support to the striker in the comments section.
Reacting to the 22-year-old’s achievement, Hojlund wrote: “Congratulations my friend.” This sentiment was echoed by United skipper Bruno Fernandes, who chimed in: “Buzzing for you.”
Since his loan transfer to Napoli, Hojlund has netted three goals in five matches. His latest goals were scored in midweek when he bagged a brace in the 2-1 triumph over Sporting.
He appears to be enjoying his time at Napoli, having been left impressed with the winning culture at the club.
Speaking last month, Hojlund said: “There’s a special football culture here. I felt it right away when I came to Naples for the first time as an opponent with Atalanta.
“The fans were crazy and very passionate, which makes them different from the others. The city is truly beautiful, the climate is wonderful.
“But above all, I found a family atmosphere, which is exactly what I needed at this point in my career.”
