Rare gold 50p coin sells for over £2,000 after sparking eBay bidding war

Collectors can pay an absolute fortune for a rare coin on eBay.

And, with only 210,000 in circulation, the Kew Gardens 50p is considered to be one of the most sought-after pieces out there. Collectors will splash the cash to get their hands on one.

Now one eBay seller has managed to bag a small windfall after selling a special gold edition, reports the Daily Star. The 2009 “ultra cameo rare” piece sold for £2,500.

According to the owner, the gold coin is a “rare find for any collector of British decimal coinage”. It features the iconic Kew Gardens design with a PF69 grading, meaning it’s in near-perfect condition.

The listing stated: “The denomination of this coin is 50p and it is a valuable addition to any coin collection. Its exquisite design showcases the beauty of Kew Gardens and its gold composition adds to its rarity.

“Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own this stunning piece of British history. Please check my other items.”

Since the seller put the coin on eBay, it racked up a total of 33 bids from 11 different users. During the 10-day duration, it went from a starting price of just 99p to a whopping £2,500.

It didn’t take long for it to reach the hundreds as the first bid kicked off at £125. Then one day later it reached £500 before hitting the £1,000 mark.

Selling the coin at £2,500 means the person who listed it made a massive profit from its face value. It went for more than 5,000 times the 50p it was worth.

A gold Kew Gardens is though incredibly difficult to find. According to coin experts, owning one is estimated to fetch between £5,000 and £6,000.

The much-fabled Kew Gardens 50p is one of the rarest circulating coins in existence. Due to its scarcity in circulation and being a commemorative coin, many collectors want to get their hands on one.
