“People choose Fremont because it is a city with strong neighborhoods, great schools, beautiful parks, a diverse and welcoming community, and a high quality of life.”

Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan said, “Fremont’s recognition as the happiest city in America once again is an honor.”

He went on to say that while the city strives to be a place where families flourish and businesses prosper, “rankings are not the finish line.”

A national study by Wallet Hub compared large cities across three key areas: emotional and physical well-being, income and employment, and community and environment.

Fremont also has the nation’s highest life satisfaction, the seventh-lowest depression rate, and the fifth-longest average life expectancy, according to the personal finance app.

Step inside Country Way Diner, a beloved local fixture for 48 years, and the spirit of community is immediately palpable.

Staff members share that regulars often span generations, with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren gathering at the same tables year after year. These traditions offer a glimpse into why so many are happy to call Fremont home.

Salwan added that there is still more to do to make the city even better and even happier, including “continuing to improve public safety, addressing homelessness, supporting affordability, investing in neighborhoods, and expanding opportunity for all residents.”

What fills him with the most pride, he said, is not the recognition alone, but the people who make it possible.

“Fremont’s residents are engaged, caring, and deeply invested in this city’s future, and that is what truly makes Fremont special.”

Five other California cities made the top 25 happiest: Irvine (No. 8), San Jose (No. 10), San Francisco (No. 17), San Diego (No. 21) and Huntington Beach (No. 25).
