Rachel Reeves big speech leaves viewers in stitches – ‘why does she sound like a Dalek? | Politics | News

Rachel Reeves’ delivery of a speech at the Labour conference has been compared to a Dalek’s. The Chancellor warned of “global headwinds” as she hinted at further tax rises in a speech heavy on politics and light on policy from the podium in Liverpool on Monday, September 29.

Viewers of Ms Reeves’ speech took to social media to post their reactions, including on X-user who likened the Chancellor to an alien from TV series Doctor Who and its common catchphrase.

They wrote: “Rachel Reeves has the presentation skills of a Dalek. EXTERMINATE!!”

Another X-user said: “Rachel Reeves is the first AI Chancellor”. Another commented: “Rachel Reeves I- Am-A-Dalek!”

The Chancellor’s delivery sparked criticism from a third user of the social media platform, who wrote: “Rachel Reeves [is] robotic and going through the motions”.

Others praised the Chancellor’s speech, with one X-user saying: “Not often impressed by Rachel Reeves but her conference speech is robust and determined, as she defends her time as Chancellor”.

Another said: “Good speech by Chancellor Rachel Reeves spelling out the difference between Labour and the Tories and Reform. Particularly welcome the commitment to end long term youth unemployment. Well done Rachel”.

A sixth X-user commented: “Excellent speech, the kind she gave to business leaders prior to the election. Actions speak louder than words. Rachel Reeves has one more chance to deliver. Gets her next Budget wrong and she’s toast, along with Starmer”.

The Chancellor used her conference speech to insist she would keep control of the public finances and would “not take risks with the trust placed in us by the British people”.

But she claimed her choices had been made “harder” by international events and “long-term damage” done to the economy.

Ms Reeves told her audience of Labour supporters: “This year has brought its fair share of challenges for our party and our country. They won’t be the last. We’ve turned our backs on the path of decline, and we’ve chosen investment, but there is further to go. So yes, I’m proud that under our watch, Britain has been the fastest growing economy in the G7, but is there more to do if we want prosperity in every part of Britain? Absolutely.”

The Chancellor also said the greatest danger facing the country was Reform UK, adding Nigel Farage’s outfit was not on the side of working people, with its opposition to the Government’s workers’ rights reforms.

But X-users took issue with the Chancellor’s record so far. One said: “It’s blindingly obvious to everyone except Rachel Reeves, Sir Keir Starmer and the rest of this inept Labour government that the UK economy would be bigger if it weren’t for HER jobs tax and reckless borrowing…”.
