As temperatures drop across the UK, one thing people are having to try and battle with is waking up to frozen cars during the mornings. However, little you may know, a simple method can lead to defrosting them in no time and ensuring you can drive off without a lengthy delay.
According to the RAC (Royal Automobile Club), the key to defrosting your car windows lies in using a simple button to get the job done quickly. The hack is well worth noting, as it could lead to making your morning routine a lot easier, especially as we’ve already seen so much cold weather in January.
It’s not the only handy piece of driving advice to be shared recently either. Earlier this month, it was revealed how you can de-ice your winscreen by using a simple household item.
The topic recently came up on Reddit, when a user asked: “Any tricks [for] unfreezing car windows? We have been in sub zero temperatures for over a week now, and my wife’s windows are all frozen shut.
“Even with the car warmed up, they won’t unfreeze. The driver’s side one is the biggest issue because she likes to go to the drive-through for coffee. Is there a way to unfreeze them, or will we have to wait until it warms up more later during the week before anything can be done?”
One person replied, saying: “Park it in a parking garage overnight?” Another replied: ” Lock de-icer.”
A third couldn’t help but make a joke, writing: “Wait for May. Always works.” However, if you’re looking for a serious answer during the winter months, the RAC has got you covered.
On the website, it issues expert advice on how to defrost windows in the easiest way. It’s pretty simple when you know what to do.
What does the RAC suggest?
It states: “Can’t operate the windows? Once the engine has warmed up and while still parked, direct the air vents towards the windows and select the hottest temperature to get them opening and closing again.”
Apparently, that’s all you need to do to thaw your windows. It’s not as difficult as you may have thought, as you only need to use one button.
How does it work?
If you want to defrost frozen car windows, you need to use the air vents. To begin, start the engine and then set the climate control to the windshield vents.
Turn the heat to the maximum temperature and then activate the air conditioning to dehumidify. Make sure the fan is set to high.
You need to ensure outside air is being used to bring in the driest air possible to clear condensation or frost. You shouldn’t just be recirculating the same air.
When it comes to external ice, you may need to do a little more work to remove this by hand. However, the dry air helps from the inside.
It’s a hack many people may not realise actually works. To make things better, you only need to make use of one simple car button to get the job done.
