A celebrity chef says we’ve been making cheese on toast wrong and adding a small amount of one ingredient – at the right time – will take it to the next level. Many people already add Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce to their cheese on toast – but experts say many are doing it at the wrong time.
More than a third put the sauce on top of the cheese, where it slides off. But experts say it belongs under the cheese, directly on the toast, where it caramelises and soaks into the bread.
85% of Brits eat cheese on toast once a week, and 41% say they add Worcestershire Sauce. But according to posts on Reddit and TikTok people often get it wrong – and say it just spills to the side of the plate.
Gizzi Erskine, celebrity chef, said: “I’ve loved Lea and Perrins on cheese on toast for years, but flipping the order really does unleash so much more flavour. I can’t believe I’ve been doing it wrong all this time. Putting the sauce on top means it just slides off, but under the cheese is where the magic happens, the Lea and Perrins soaks in and transforms the toast into pure umami heaven.”
Thiago Rapp, Director of Taste Elevation at Lea and Perrins, said: “For 190 years we’ve known where the sauce belongs, directly on the toast. Our new label is a reminder of toast, then sauce, then cheese. This isn’t a new trick. It’s the original one. We just forgot to mention it.”
Llimited-edition bottles are available to buy from the Tourist Information Centre at Worcester’s Guildhall while stocks last, RRP £2.50, or through a competition on Lea and Perrins Instagram @leaandperrinsuk.
