Queen Letizia was spotted in tears after she got pelted with mud following a visit to flood-hit Valencia.

In support of their country, King Felipe and Queen Letizia paid a visit to the areas most badly-hit by the floods on Sunday.

As the couple walked alongside the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, they were also pelted with mud by some angered members of the public.

Despite this, some of the locals were said to be happy to see the royals present – with the Queen pictured speaking to a woman.

Comforting her as she wept, Queen Letizia could also be seen with her head in her hands, with the royal being brought to tears by the devastation.

Prior to the royal visit, their representatives posted on Instagram: “Our deep gratitude for the messages of condolence, consolation, support and solidarity with the Spanish people due to the devastating consequences of the DANA.”

Following the King and Queen’s visit, they also posted another message. This one read: “The [royals] have visited this morning the municipality of Paiporta (Valencia), one of the places seriously affected by the terrible DANA that we have suffered in our country.”

Explaining why the Spanish King and Queen visited, their post read: “They wanted to be close to the neighbours, listen to them and know their situation, as well as thank the work of emergency services, state, regional and local forces and security forces, civil protection and NGOs that are working tirelessly in the rescue and recovery of basic supplies in the affected places, and with whom the [royals] have been in constant contact during these days.”

Despite their visit likely being controversal, many supporters were in support of the Spanish royals visit.

One fan commented: “While politicians and presidents flee, Their Majesties stay to suffer the mud and anguish of the crowd, to talk to the displaced and console the desperate. Long live the King, long live the Queen, long live Spain!”
