Quaint village dubbed ‘the most beautiful’ place with ‘crystal clear lake’ | UK | Travel

A Cumbrian village that was once home to William Wordsworth is known for its beautiful lake with “crystal clear” water and “picturesque” scenery.

Grasmere, in the centre of the Lake District, is nestled next to Grasmere Lake and surrounded by fells and mountains.

Visitors can enjoy a walk around the shops, cafes, and pubs, visit the iconic poet’s grave, and take in the breathtaking views.

Grasmere is personified by its old cottages and blue-green slate houses. At the centre of the village is a church, St Oswald’s, and Dove Cottage, the former home of Wordsworth.

Visitors of the cottage can step into the past as the house has been brought back to life with smells, sounds and sights evoking memories of more than 200 years ago.

The lake, which has inspired generations of poets and painters, offers a serene walk, and also serves as the base for an ascent of the Helvellyn range, Fairfield and Dollywagon Pike. Grasmere Lake is one of the smallest in the area at just a mile long, but it still draws people from all over the country, whether that be hikers, cyclists, or those simply wanting to take in the views,

Swimmers can enjoy the lake, and kayaks and rowing boats can also be rented by those who want to explore the water.

Grasmere can be reached by the 599 bus service between Bowness, Windermere, Rydal and Grasmere – and if you’re coming from Lancaster and Kendal, you can get the 555 service to Keswick through the area.

One visitor said the lake was “calm and flat”, adding: “The water is crystal clear, and even in shallow water, fish are present. I swam a fair way out, and could still see my feet in the deep. A totally breathtaking lake, and an unforgettable swim.”

Another said that the walk around the lake was one of the “most beautiful and rewarding” in the Lake District. A third said: “There is a great circular walk around Grasmere from the village that is very manageable. It is incredibly picturesque and peaceful. There is a great stopping point at the other end of the lake to have a picnic and enjoy the views.”

Meanwhile, one visitor added: “A fabulous short walk around Grasmere lake with some stunning views. Nice, easy to follow footpath and not at all challenging. Ideal if stopping in Grasmere to pass a couple of hours on this gentle stroll and recommend stopping for a warm drink at Faeryland.”
